New IMO regulations
New IMO regulations regarding LRIT (Long Range Identification and Tracking) is approaching.

Most of your vessels are able to use existing SSAS / Inmarsat C equipment for this matter. Anyway, there are some limitations. Below we have set up a summary of the regulations. Options are to upgrade existing software or to purchase a separate system. As this is a simple system that may be installed by the crew, it may be the cheapest and easiest solution.

What is LRIT?

LRIT is short for Long Range Identification and Tracking. LRIT is a global system for improvement of the maritime safety and rescue operations. “Pollution monitoring” is a function that most likely will be implemented in LRIT in the future. Short version of the LRIT: Allow participating countries to receive position reports from vessel in their own territorial areas, vessel applying for permission to enter ports or foreign vessel close to the territorial boarders.

Who needs LRIT?

  • All passenger ships
  • Trading/cargo vessel in international passages above 300 GT
  • Mobile offshore drilling units / Mobile platforms (MOU)
  • Vessels operating in A2-A4 areas and do not have Inmarsat C GMDSS

What information will be transmitted from LRIT?

IMO performance standard includes the following (APR):

  • Vessel Identity
  • Position
  • Date and time for position

The equipment should be able to reply a request for position and reply immediately. APR should be sent minimum 4 times a day (every 6.hour) and in intervals of down to 15 minutes by request from participating Authorities.

May we use existing equipment?

IMO has specified Inmarsat C as the primary communication system for LRIT. If you got the correct Inmarsat C software onboard, you may use this.

Following equipment may be used as LRIT:

  • Sailor TT-300SSA (SW 2.21) Ship Security Alert System (SW 2.12 must be updated)
  • Sailor TT-300E (SW 2.21) GMDSS Mini C
  • Sailor TT-3020C / H2095C (SW 3.36) GMDSS

Software is free of charge. Only travelcost and onboard time apply.

Timetable for Installation of LRIT (300 GT or above)

Ships constructed on or after 31st December 2008:
From date of build.

Ships constructed before 31st December Area A1,A2,A3:
Not later than 1st survey of the radio installation after 31st December 2008

Ships constructed before 31st December Area A4:
Not later than 1st survey of the radio installation after 1st July 2009

Alternative separate “Stand alone” LRIT

Low-cost , easy to install separate LRIT antenna incl 20 or 50 meter cable.

Separate system not interfering with existing Inmarsat C / SSAS.

May be installed by the crew.

Back-up to existing Inmarsat C / SSAS with valid software.

Avoid large fines from authorities. (vessels with defective LRIT may be charged large fines in US ports).
